You might have heard about Roy Rolstad from Oslo, Norway. He is best known from conducting the ITF Radix seminars with his friend Robert Boer from the Netherlands (http://www.itfeurope.org/NL2015-01-25.html). Roy has started a movement on Facebook which is getting more and more popular amongst ITF practitioners from all around the globe: do 10,000 side kicks in 2017. I have made a short interview with him about his idea.
Let’s start with the obvious question: how did the idea pop into your mind?
We did an event last year with 1000 bandae dollyo chagi, and we had some fun with it. It was in Norwegian language, and it was easy to do: we made 1000 kicks in one month. So I was thinking: let’s do 10,000 in a year! We all know the Bruce Lee quote: “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”. And I mentioned it at an ITF Radix seminar in Denmark, so we made the event in English so our international friends could also join if they wanted.
How many people you think will join the event?
Currently we have 200 people who marked on Facebook that they want to do the 10,000 side kicks, and about a hundred who are also interested. I will be happy if twenty of them will complete it. But Facebook is not law, so who knows?
How people can join the movement? What should they do?
It is easy. Just join the Facebook event, just simply do 100 kicks, and log it in the event: “100 down, 9900 to go”. Next time you kick 100: “200 down, 9800 to go”. You may of course write additional information. One important thing is to do variations of the side kicks. For example you do 30 yop cha olligi, 20 pushing side kicks, 20 Willy kicks, 20 strong side kicks with instep (like in power breaking) and 10 in the air like in patterns. Of course there is no obligation, everyone can do their own variation. It must be done with both legs (10,000 each!). You can do it in class or in your own training or at home.
Willy kicks?
That is Master Willy vd Mortel’s kicks. Everybody does it here in Norway, as he is our National Coach. It is a sparring kick: lift/kick/skip variation.
How much time does it take to do 100-100 kicks every day?
A hundred kicks with both legs takes about 15 minutes. Basically if you do that two times a week, you are covered for the 10,000 kicks. The only trick is to do it.
What does doing a lot of yop chagis mean to you?
This is for me to go back to the roots. Radix again. When I was a white belt with Master Andresen, we did a lot of yop cha olligi and ap cha olligi every training. This have been a habit with him. Master Andresen was and is still my greatest inspiration. You know the quote from Einstein: "The reason I see so far, is because I'm a dwarf standing on the shoulders of giants"
Now let's kick it! #kick10k2017
