The 70th International Instructor Course was held in Watford (County of Hertfordshire), England from 27th to 29th of January 2012. The Seminar was hosted by the England Taekwon-Do Association (ETA). There were also well known international class referees; Mr. Martin Schellens, Mr. Wojciech Zdanuczyk, Mr. Harry van Schaik. The IIC was conducted by the Technical Instruction Committee; Grand Master Hector Marano (Chairman), Grand Master Willem Jacob Bos (Member) and Grand Master Ung Kim Lan (Member). Grand Master Tom MacCallum, who will celebrate his 70th birthday this year, honored the opening and closing ceremony of the 70th International Instructor Course.

Grand Masters did an excellent job during the three days of the course. Their great knowledge and passion, positive attitude and approachable way of teaching encouraged participants to put in a big effort in their hard training. During the twelve hours of the fantastic seminar all questions were answered and all doubts clarified in all aspects of Taekwon-Do.

On Saturday seven people took part in a promotional test conducted by Master Ellis VIII Degree, President of England Taekwon-Do Association. Three candidates were successfully promoted; Mr. Markus Wittebo from Sweden (IV to V Degree), Mr. Vencislav Ignatow President of Bulgarian Association of Taekwon-Do (III to IV Degree) and Mr. Janne Vuononvitra from Finland (III to IV Degree). I asked Mr. Wittebo for more details regarding the grading.

Grand Masters and Masters at the official Banquet

On Saturday evening full-dressed Grand Masters, Masters and over hundred willing participants took part in a stylish banquet. People enjoyed three-course meal in a friendly companionship, had many pleasant conversations, and a photo session with Grand Masters. For everyone who wished a dancing party was organised after the dinner.

The general feedback from the participants was very positive, with many compliments for the organising committee, family atmosphere, the level of Grand Masters’ knowledge and the way of their teaching. Some of the students were expected more ‘DO’ and less free sparring. All participants left the venue well motivated for the future training, full of great experience and priceless knowledge.

I have asked some distinguished participants for their conclusion of the IIC. My questions were:

I have received very valuable opinions.

Master Nardizzi VIII Degree, England

The IIC was very successful. Many attendees and I was impressed to see many Masters attending. The Technical Committee have done a great job in standardising Taekwon-Do and they delivered the course in a friendly and enjoyable way.

The disappointment was that many instructors asked the same questions that have been answered many times before in an IIC. They need to attend more IIC's or train with a Master that can give them the information.

Also, many black belts need to improve their Courtesy towards the Grand Masters. i.e bowing properly and being more humble.

Master O’Toole VIII Degree, Ireland

The IIC was very well organized, it was nice to see so many people, I think there was two hundred and thirty including ten Masters which is very impressive, especially on the last day with so many people performing Tong-Il.

What appealed to me was being to clarify a lot of the grey areas that arise in the patterns, and to agree to standardize them with the Technical Committee.

The only weaknesses I would say, if you would like to call it that, during the tutorials perhaps if people were in a class room, or if the was seating available I think people would be able to concentrate more.

Master Dunbar VII Degree, Scotland

If there was a weakness (I prefer minor fault) it would have been that, had the GMs been talking with a microphone for the whole of the course more people would have learnt more. Many could only see but not hear! Also there were too many people for me but that is a good and a bad sign. Good that so many want the IIC but bad as the GMs can only see and correct so many people at one time.

The overall impression was good. Taking into consideration the changing of venue at the last minute due to the fantastic response to the IIC, the organisers did a great job.

The Hotels were good and laying on transport for students to the venue was excellent. Compliments to all concerned.

Master Jerzy Jedut VII Degree, Poland

I evaluate the IIC in England very highly. There were a few positive surprises I found in Hertfordshire. First of all: very many participants, good and friendly atmosphere during the course, and more opportunities to discuss with grandmasters about some ‘not clear’ TKD movements comparing to the past IIC’s I have attended. Secondly: good organization despite to huge number of participants, proper sport facilities, nice hospitality and the banquet. It’s worth to add that there were almost not doubtful answers for the asked questions, and no special changes in the techniques. This is important to me as gen. Choi’s legacy should be inviolable as much as possible.

Really friendly atmosphere during the IIC impressed me the most. I understand that is not easy to conduct such a big IIC but it’s always possible to improve what we do. I believe that participants would definitely feel better if warm-up exercises were closely related to the physical tasks practiced next. I think people would learn much more if they were divided into groups regardless to their Degree and technical level. My additional opinion is there should be more repetitions of the patterns and fundamental movements during the course, especially for higher Degrees.

Wojciech Zdanuczyk VI Degree, Poland

Every IIC is important to me. It stimulates to reflection on the Taekwon-Do ITF’s techniques, confirms that path I follow is right and ‘charges batteries’ for the further training. It is also an opportunity to meet instructors from other countries and exchange experiences. My positive impressions of the course are; indomitable spirit of Grand Master Bos (especially in the face of his recent operation), Grand Master Marano’s knowledge, and Grand Master Lan’s vitality. Unfortunately, the weakness of the course was a large number of the participants I personally think. Not everyone could benefit directly from the knowledge of Grand Masters. Another weakness was a big difference of the technical level of the participants. So, I would like to gently propose and kindly ask the ITF Technical Committee to organize the IIC for the IV Degree and above somewhere in central Europe.

Harry van Schaik V Degree, The Netherlands

The general impression was that it was a great boost for the ITF in whole of the UK who didn’t had an IIC in a long time. I met new ITF participants who just joined our ITF and they were really impressed by the structure and consistency of the information being presented. This was very good to hear as we are so blessed with our leaders under the guidance of Grand Master Marano that it almost becomes normal for us but in fact we are very lucky to have the Grand Masters working for the ITF and all of us and in general… The most impressive part of this IIC was off course the Grand Masters with their specific knowledge, Grand Master Marano always amaze me with his technical knowledge and his sharp eye for details. Grand Master Bos showed a display of indomitable spirit to join this IIC, and I hope he will recover very soon. Grand Master Lan gives us an extra “Asian” way of thinking to the IIC, and I see his role becoming bigger. I really like the way of thinking of Grand Master Lan and sharing his knowledge of the Asian way of thinking about the Martial Arts. A point of concern is always the environment to work in, unfortunate the organizers were faced with finding a new hall in the last moment and this gave some challenges but with spirit they handled it and I am grateful for this. The banquet was very nicely put together, and great to meet with dear friends from all over the world. I am looking forward to the next IIC’s and hope that beside the very important parts we have now in the IIC, the instructors also get some more guidance in teaching specific groups and topics.

Markus Wittebo V Degree, Sweden

It is very impressive to see about 240 participants lead by all the Masters in the front row. The arrangement was very good with a nice hotel, good food and busses to transport us to/from the venue. The Grand Masters do always deliver above expectations and you always learn new details when participating at an IIC. All in all, well done by the organizer and the Grand Masters!

The content, the number of participants and the atmosphere set by Grand Masters and Masters impressed me most. It’s very nice to see that no matter what Kup or Degree you hold everyone is feeling relaxed enough to demonstrate techniques in front of the audience and ask questions

For all who have missed the IIC in Watford, Hertfordshire there is good news. The next International Instructor Course in Europe will be host in Livingstone, Scotland from 11th to 13th of May. All needed information on http://www.itfeurope.org/NL2012-01-14.html, www.itfscotland.co.uk.
