ITF Scottish Championships Report

On the morning of 13th February 2011 many Instructors, Competitors, Umpires and supporters from across Scotland travelled to The Bellahouston Sports Centre in Glasgow for the ITF Scottish Championships 2011.

238 competitors had entered from 21 schools in Scotland to compete for the title “Scottish Champion 2011”.

The day got off to a great start with all the under 13 years events starting over 5 rings, with 13-17 years & senior special technique and power events also taking place in the morning. Titles were hard fought with some of the divisions having 25 plus competitors.

On completion of the under 13’s Pattern and Sparring competition, the audience, competitors and umpires were given a demonstration from the members of Scottish Junior Male Pattern Team who will be travelling to New Zealand in few weeks to compete at the ITF World Championships. The team gave a great performance of 4 patterns culminating in Won-Hyo; chosen at random by Grandmaster MacCallum 9th Degree.

After the demonstration the competition progressed onto the teens and adult section, where again there was a very high standard of competition for the Scottish title, with many of the national team competing in the black belt events also.

The title of Overall School Champions went down to the wire, and was decided during the last event of the day; senior male black belt special technique. The 2011 title went to East Kilbride with 11 gold medals.

We must thank the 50 plus umpires who worked tirelessly throughout the day, as without them the championships wouldn’t be the success they were.
