Mazovia Cup 2007, Poland

From 17th to 18th November 2007 in Ciechanów (about 90km North from Warsaw) was held the International Championship Mazovia Cup – 1st Polish Open. The competition was held in a sport hall MOSIR, where in 2006 was organised the Interantional Taekwon-do Match and in May this year the Polish Junior Championships. The main organizer was Mr. Michal Korzybski, IV Degree, the coach of LKS Matsogi Ciechanów, as well as the coach of Polish Male National Team.

The championship was held under the honor patronage of Mr. Adam Struzik, Marshal of the Mazowieckie Province and Mr. Waldemar Wardziński, President of Ciechanów City who was present at the tournament during the finals.

221 competitors from 42 schools representing following 7 countries: Czech Republic, England, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Slovakia and Poland took part in this event.

On Saturday, November 17th were held both of senior advanced and junior colored categories in pattern and sparring. The ceremonial finals where organized on Saturday evening. Apart from the chosen finals the spectators could enjoy the demonstration of traditional sparring performed by the twin brothers Piotr and Paweł Szwejkowski from Matsogi Ciechanów as well as the demonstrations of the female dance group from the nearby Plonsk City.

On this evening were selected as well the best fighters of the finals who became Paulina Heiskanen (Tampere TKD Club) from Finland and Milosz Moskaluk (MKS Lewart AGS Lubartów) from Poland.

On Sunday, November 18th, were played other categories of senior colored and junior advanced patter and sparring.

The sport level was high, although some of the referee’s decisions caused deserved controversy.

Among the female competitors leaded Paulina Heiskanen from Finland, current World Champion in pattern I Degree, who in absence of Marzanna Pawlik (LKT Legnica), won two gold medals: in female sparring up to 52kg and pattern I Degree and became the best senior female competitors.

Kamila Szustak from TKD Lechmed Toruń (Poland) became the best junior female competitor with 1 gold in pattern I Degree and silver in sparring up to 50kg.

The promising summit male fights some of which we were writing in our earlier news did not happen. In the sparring category over 80 kg should have measured Dariusz Idzikowski (SKS Start Olsztyn), the current World Champion in this category and Zak Espi – member of England National Team, representing Ellis Taekwon-do Association. Both competitors sustained an injury during the qualifier fights and therefore couldn’t meet in the direct fight. This category was won by Marcin Ptak from MKST Bystrzyca Kłodzka.

We were awaiting as well the sparring category up to 63kg where Miłosz Moskaluk (World Champion -54kg in Rimini 2001) should have return fight with Matt Cadle from England, the current World Champion up to 63kg, who won with the Polish competitor in the semi final in Canada. Unexpected and after the controversial verdict Matt Cadle lost against Kamil Kurkowski from Taewo Warszawa and could only fight in the requalification system for the third place, meanwhile Milosz Moskaluk became the winner of this category.

The best senior male competitor was Marcin Wronowski from MKS Lewart Lubartów, by winning gold medal in senior advanced male pattern I Degree and silver medal in sparring up to 71kg.

Among the junior competitors the best was Paweł Dabrowski from LKT Legnica, who won gold in sparring up to 55kg and silver in pattern, colored belts.

In senior medal classification won KWSW „Taewo” Warszawa (5 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals). The second place took MKS “Lewart” AGS Lubartów (4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals). On third place was Tampere Taekwon-do Club from Finland (2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medal).

In junior medal classification the best club became WSKT Wrocław (2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal). On the second place was LKS Matsogi Ciechanów (2 gold,1 silver and 4 bronze medals). The third place took Latvian Taekwon-do Association (2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals).

In over all general medal classification the best clubs were:

  1. KWSW Taewo Warszawa (5, 3, 6).
  2. MKS „Lewart” AGS Lubartów (4, 2, 1)
  3. LKS MAtsogi Ciechanów (3 (1), 3 (1), 6).

Final results:

An interesting issue was the new formula of the sparring competition. From this year the tournaments for seniors in Poland will be played in the requalification system, which assume that each competitor after he lose in the main round, has a chance to fight again in further competition in which the third place is the field. This is way the tournament was very good for participants in terms of training. Each competitor had many fights. Additionally in the groups with smaller amount of people was pool system were everybody fought against everybody, which as well increased the number of sparring.

Before many competitors from abroad wanted to take part in the competition system in Poland, but the competition rules forbid it. Therefore, to come up to their expectations, the Polish Taekwon-do Association Board of Directors have decided, that each year in autumn the International Open Polish Championships will be organized.

Therefore the next Junior and Senior International Open Polish Championship will be organized from 21st to 23rd November 2008.
