Irish Cup International 2006

The Irish Cup International was held during the weekend 11-12th November 2006 in UL Arena, Limerick, Ireland. The event was attended by 328 competitors from Ireland, Scotland, Poland, Romania and Russia. Saturday was for all Cadet and Senior events and Sunday was for under 12 years old and Senior Team finals.

The event was well organised and professionally managed, starting at 9am and finishing at 5pm on both days. Each competitor was issued with their competitor pass which precisely detailed the time and ring number on which each event would take place.

The ability level of junior competitors and cadets was very promising with many memorable matches, especially the exciting bout between two of Ireland’s Junior World Cup Champions, Haydn Devoy and Philip McCauliffe. There were some very exciting senior bouts also with talented competitors showing their skill including; Stephen Ryan, Donal O’Donoghue, Darren Smith, Marcin Oworuszko, Tomasz Olek, Sylwester Zalewski, Luke Woods, Karl Kelly, Gill Sommerville, Siobhan Kangataran, Piotr Kurkus and many others.

On Sunday the spectators enjoyed the finals of the team match. Team pattern final was ITA Southern Region v ITA Eastern Region, with the Eastern Region taking the Gold medal on this occasion. Team sparring final was Rivervalley/Ratoath (Coach; Mr. Stephen Cooley) v Mulhuddart Sport Taekwon-Do Club (Guest Coach; Ms. Joanna Paprocka). This was an action packed final with Rivervalley/Ratoath taking Gold with a score of 3-2.

The venue for next year’s Irish Cup International will be the National Basketball Arena in Dublin. Please put the date in your calendar 24th–25th November 2007. Next year’s event promises to be even bigger with the possibility of professional bouts and television coverage, which are currently being negotiated with interested sponsors.
